Lake Mountain is only 30 km from Wombat Cottage and is Victoria's biggest cross country ski & toboggan field. During the snow season it attracts thousands of snow enthusiasts everyday.
Mountain stream trout fishing is another popular activity here, we can provide information of the best fishing spots. There are two trout & salmon fish farms as an alternative to fishing the streams.
There is plenty of bird life in the ranges. Kookaburra, Magpie, Mud Lark, Currawong, Black Bird, Grey Thrush, Pigeon, Crimson Rosella, King Parrot, Wrens.., from dawn to dusk they sing, they fly they parade. It is just magic.
Opposite Wombat Cottage is a State Forest Reserve which some local people call "Wombat Village". In different seasons you will see native flowers and Fungi. A nice walking track through the forest links up with tracks to the Black Spur Inn & Dom Dom Saddle.
If you drive from Melbourne, you can stop at some of the Yarra Valley's top wineries for wine tasting or visit the famous Healesville Sanctuary you will then pass through the beautiful Black Spur Mountain Ash forest, an icon of tourism in Victoria.
